False teachers are the accursed ones because they have forsaken the truth. They cannot control their lusts and are driven by greed. The voice of the Lord speaks unto them, commanding them to repent, but they refuse to listen.

In 2 Peter 2:14 – 16 (ESV), Peter writes of false teachers as the accursed ones:

“They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.”

False teachers are driven by perversion, power, and prosperity. ‘Eyes full of adultery’ refers to the perversion of false teachers. They have an uncontrollable sexual appetite. False teachers commit adultery and fornication mentally (Matthew 5:27 – 28) and physically (Exodus 20:14). ‘Entice unsteady souls’ refers to the power false teachers have over the weak. False teachers prey on innocent and vulnerable Christians to gain control over them. People in dire circumstances or with a superficial understanding of the Bible are easier to manipulate. ‘Hearts trained in greed’ refers to the prosperity of false teachers. False teachers desire wealth and prosperity more than they do truth. Therefore, they manipulate weak Christians to gain wealth so they can fund their sinful and perverse lifestyles.

Peter compares false teachers to the prophet Balaam. Balaam lived in the time of Moses and was a prophet of God (Numbers 22 – 24). However, Balaam offered his services to anyone who would pay the price. Balaam cared more about wealth than obedience to God. King Balak of Moab enticed Balaam with financial reward to curse the Israelites. God prevented this from happening by using a talking donkey (Numbers 22:21 – 35). God is commanding false teachers to repent through Christians and His Word. False teachers are the accursed onesbecause they forsake the way of truth to pursue their sinful desires.
