The blasphemy of false teachersextends far beyond them denying our Master, God. False teachers are even so bold and willful to blaspheme the glorious ones, the angels. The arrogance of false teachers shows their disregard for any authority, be it good or bad.

In 2 Peter 2:10 – 11 (ESV), Peter explains the blasphemy of false teachers:

“And especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.”

Peter follows his recount of God’s judgement in 2 Peter 2:4 – 9 with a discussion around the blasphemy of false teachers towards Satan and the fallen angels. As seen in 2 Peter 2:9, God will ‘keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgement’. And Peter hones in on false teachers in verse 10 as ones who ‘indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.’ False teachers are ‘bold and willful’ in their blasphemy. They defiantly and deliberately speak evil of Satan and his fallen angels. The false teachers ‘do not tremble’ as they have no reverence or respect for Satan and the fallen angels (Jude 1:8). We must show a certain level of respect towards the ‘glorious ones’, who are Satan and his angels.

We do this because Satan and his angels are of the angelic order, created by God. They transcend time, and as those of the supernatural world, they have a certain dignity and honour (Ephesians 6:12). Satan and his angels are still the enemies of God and believers, but we should never speak evil of Satan and his angels. The holy angels, because of their reverence for God, never speak evil of any authority. Even the archangel Michael refused to speak evil of Satan (Jude 1:9). Believers should never be foolish enough to mock or command demons and Satan. We resist the devil through disciplined study of the Bible and obeying God’s commands, not by binding spirits. The disregard false teachers have for all authority is seen as they blaspheme Satan and his angels.
